Papers of Thomas Farmer Dukes and family, of Shropshire County, England. Correspondence was pasted in three volumes of the 1805, 1818, and 1821 census books of the county of Shropshire. Also includes a commonplace book containing poems, clippings, and water color paintings by Edward Rowland Dukes, and an indexed book of food and wine recipes, medical remedies, and instructions for making inks, varnishes and other ephemera.

Collection of twenty-five oil paintings on canvas and panel executed by E. A. Burbank during the end of the nineteenth and beginning of the twentieth centuries. Predominately composed of intimately-scaled portraits of American Indian men and women, this collection offers invaluable insight into the pictorial depiction of the American Indian during the turn of the twentieth century as well as the cultural cache attached to the depiction of native subjects.

Papers of Chicago NAACP and labor union leader E. Winston Williams, who served as president of the Chicago Southside NAACP chapter from 1971-1974. Papers also reflect activities of Ina D. Williams (wife of E. Winston Williams), who played an integral behind-the-scenes role in Williams' administration. Collection includes photographs, clippings, programs, brochures, and correspondence documenting the activities of the NAACP chapter and Williams’s involvement with Chicago labor unions.

Papers pertaining to the family of Illinois U.S. Representative John R. Eden (1826-1909). The majority of the material primarily concerns John R. Eden’s daughter Rose, her husband Ivory J. Martin, and their children. The papers also contain correspondence and material relating to the Taylor and Pifer families, who were the in-laws of Rose and Ivory’s son, Robert W. Martin. (Robert Martin married Ruth Pifer, daughter of Hattie Taylor and Finley Pifer).

Martin to His Daughters: Olive Eden Martin and Mabel Martin George.

Edgar McLean Papers

Correspondence, writings, and official military documents of 1st Lieutenant Edgar McLean. McLean fought for the Union in the Civil War with the 122nd Illinois Regiment, and then became a Lieutenant in the 110th U.S. Colored Infantry. Most correspondence was written by Edgar McLean’s mother and other relatives to him during his service.
